Guy Fawkes Night

Leland, Carmen and Cheryl on Mt. VicDefinitely never heard of this one before... In 1605, a man by the name of Guy Fawkes attempted to sabotage and blow up parliament in Britain, in an act of conspiracy. Anyway, the crazy nut was caught and burnt alive.

Will, Paul and Ruthie on the hillWell heck, why not celebrate with lots of fireworks and drunken debauchery. Seems like the right thing to do.

Remember, remember the fifth of November,
Gunpowder Treason and Plot,

I see no reason why gunpowder treason

should ever be forgot.

Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes,
'twas his intent
to blow up
the King and the Parliament.

Three score barrels of powder below,

Poor old England to overthrow:

By God's providence he was catch'd

With a dark lantern and burning match.

Holloa boys, holloa boys,
make the bells ring.

Holloa boys, holloa boys,
God save the King!

Hip hip hoorah!

Ruthie, Me and Cheryl

A penny loaf to feed the Pope.

A farthing o' cheese to choke him.
A pint of beer to rinse it down.

A faggot of sticks to burn him.

Burn him in a tub of tar.

Burn him like a blazing star.

Burn his body from his head.

Then we'll say ol' Pope is dead.

Hip hip hoorah!

Hip hip hoorah!

The fireworks...
Wellington delivered some of the best fireworks I have seen in a long time. A full 15 minutes of none stop action. A whole bunch of us, fueled by a yummy BBQ chez us and a few ales, all piled into Super Dupers van and headed up to the top of Mt. Victoria. Super, being the ultimate provider and gentleman, was unsatisfied with our initial perch on the hill, and headed up further and found us a perfect little nook where we could sit, sheltered from the winds, and enjoy the spectacle. Incredible!

BBQ time at our place, 4 Wha St.

Wow you never knew about Nov 5th... surprised they celebrate that in NZ??

Anyway as a home grown Brit I used to love "Bonfire Night" back in England. The neighborhood scavange wood from all around, build a bonfire and a Guy Fawkes effigy to perch on top. Parents usually helped with this. There would be literally tens of thosands of fires burning in across the country fireworks galore!!

Brings back to mind an ad from my youth;

"Please to remember the 5th of November, light up the sky with Standard Fireworks!"

Halloween in North America is cute BUT Guy Fawkes night is HOT!

PS Nice to chat with you again last night Cheryl!!

Coincidence... we just saw it last week, after our blog post!! We were pretty shocked that the poem I posted up on the blog was actually in the film... Funny stuff.
